George Palmer’s Mum Harriett was a smart lady.
George worked for a Leicester bookbinding company before the War and had joined the Territorial Force in the summer of 1914, six weeks before its declaration came.
Mobilised on 4th August, he crossed to France with the 1/4th Leicesters on 1st March 1915.
He made it through almost exactly two years before his Battalion’s valiant attack at Gommecourt on the Somme on 28th February 1917 took his life.
Buried at nearby Foncquevillers, widowed Harriett made sure no visitor to the #CWGC Cemetery could ever walk past his grave without stopping.
And then coming back with flowers.
